Hockey Canada has identified five major core skills: skating, passing, shooting, stickhandling, and checking. We work on all these basic skills in all of our camps. During our Spring Camp we use thirteen tests to evaluate four of the five core skills (we do not test angling/body checking). The tests are standardized tests from Hockey Canada and we established benchmarks for all age levels that athletes should strive for.
Knowing your technical gaps is of extreme importance to the developmental process and is the first step to any plan. With this information, the athlete/coach can target the weaker skills and dedicate more time to them.
